... A songwriter is someone who writes the lyrics to songs, the musical composition (chords) or melody to songs, or both. That is to say, a songwriter is a lyricist, a composer, or both. The word "songwriter" is however more commonly used to des - cribe one who writes popular songs than to describe a writer of art songs. 

   Songwriters may perform the songs they write themselves, or they may write for somebody else to perform. People who sing their own songs are nowadays typically called singer-songwriters"

...Musical improvisation is the spontaneous creative process of making music while it is being performed. Improvisation exists in almost all music, but is closely associated with particular genres such as blues, jazz, bluegrass, the Taqsim of Arabic and Turkish music, Indonesian gamelan, and Indian classical music. To use a linguistic analogy, improvisation is like speaking or having a conversation as opposed to reciting a written text. Among jazz musicians there is an adage, "improvisation is composition speeded up," and vice versa, "composition is improvisation slowed down."
