Extraordinary Musical Influence

Music Industry Pays Tribute

“In a world filled with hate, we must still dare to hope. In a world filled with anger, we must still dare to comfort. In a world filled with despair, we must still dare to dream. And in a world filled with distrust, we must still dare to believe.”

“The meaning of life is contained in every single expression of life. It is present in the infinity of forms and phenomena that exist in all of creation.”

“I wake up from dreams and go "Wow, put this down on paper." The whole thing is strange. You hear the words, everything is right there in front of your face . . .”

“If you enter this world knowing you are loved and you leave this world knowing the same, then everything that happens in between can be dealt with.”

“And my goal in life is to give to the world what I was lucky to receive: the ecstasy of divine union through my music and my dance.”

What Is Music Composition?

Music Composition   @   Wikipedia , The Free Encyclopedia

"A piece of music exists in the form of a written composition in musical notation or as a single acoustic  event (a live performance or recorded track). If composed before being performed, music can be performed  from memory, through written musical notation, or through a combination of both. Compositions comprise musical elements, which vary widely from person to person and between cultures. Improvi - sation is the act of composing immediately before or during the performance, assembling musical elements "spontaneously and eruptedly."

Study of Orchestration, Third Edition
Author: Samuel Adler
Product Description

The third edition of this high successful orchestration text follows the approach established in its innovative predecessor: Learning orchestration is best achieved through familiarity with the orchestral literature; this familiarity is most effectively accomplished from the music notation in combination with the recorded sound. The text has been revised to reflect the most informed reactions to the first and second editions, as well as Professor Adler's revisions.

For comprehensiveness, conciseness, and contemporaneity,  The Study of Orchestration remains without peer. An ancillary set of six enhanced compact discs and a workbook are available separately to accompany this textbook but are not included with the textbook.

About the Author Samuel Adler

Professor Emeritus at the Eastman School of Music, is currently teaching at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. He has held the title of visiting professor at many schools throughout the country and abroad, giving master classes in composition, orchestration, and conducting. Professor Adler has gained considerable recognition as a composer (his compositions have been performed by such ensembles as the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony), and has received numerous awards and grants. He has also been guest conductor for many prominent symphony orchestras.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory, 2nd Edition
    Author: Michael Miller
    Review By David Bennett

Music theory is often seen as unnecessary and boring to even the most musically inclined persons. Many see it as a hindrance to their natural creativity. However, without a sense of music theory, nobody will progress from playing music, to understanding and even writing music. I took a music theory class in college and used a textbook that tried to say the same things that Miller says, only the textbook was far more confusing. I think this book would actually make a fine textbook for an "Intro to Music Theory" class. He covers most basic topics, even assuming that the reader has no music knowledge. This is good for beginners, but for me it meant that I only skimmed the first few chapters. He does cover more advanced topics such as harmony, counterpoint, transcribing from audio, and transposing. At the end of each chapter, he has quizzes to review and test what was learned in the previous chapter. He includes most important topics in music theory, including scales, pitches, rhythm, melodies, chords, chord progressions, phrases, transcribing, arranging, writing lead sheets, and performing.

At the end, the book has a glossary, a guitar and piano chord reference section, and answers to the quizzes at the end of each chapter. Overall, this book has many good qualities. It is very readable and interesting. He also is able to convey difficult topics in an understandable way without sacrificing his point. Most music theory textbooks cannot do this, and overwhelm the reader. I would say this book is best for students who need an easy-to-understand book to complement a more advanced book, to clarify what they have learned in a music theory class. It is also good for musicians who don't want to be experts in music theory, but who wish to further their musical abilities. However, as I have said, it also works on its own, and I believe rivals many textbooks that are five times as expensive.

Music Composition  @  Wikipedia  -  "A piece of music exists in the form of a written composition in musical notation or as a single acoustic  event (a live performance or recorded track).

Music Improvisation  @  Wikipedia   -      Musical improvisation is the spontaneous creative process of making music while it is being performed. Improvisation exists in almost all music, but is closely associated with particular genres such as blues, jazz, bluegrass, the Taqsim of Arabic and Turkish music, Indonesian gamelan, and Indian classical music. To use a linguistic analogy, improvisation is like speaking or having a conversation as opposed to reciting a written text. Among jazz musicians there is an adage, "improvisation is composition speeded up," and vice versa, "composition is improvisation slowed down."

    MIDI  -  Open Music System (OMS) 2.3.8   |   ZDnet   |   Freeware   |

"The software tools available in the Open Music System (OMS) manage the flow of MIDI information between applications and MIDI hardware. A typical MIDI studio contains multiple MIDI devices attached to one or more MIDI interfaces. Without OMS, each individual MIDI application must keep track of all interfaces, MIDI devices, and data communication. With OMS, all applications simply use the central, standardized MIDI communication offered by OMS. This is the full version of OMS, which is significantly larger than the Lite version. Version 2.3.8 fixes bugs found in previous versions of OMS."   |

Allan Belkin, Composer   -   A Practical Guide To Music Composition   -   Free Online Book

"The aim of this book is to discuss  fundamental principles of musical composition in concise, practical terms, and to provide guidance for student composers. Many of these practical aspects of the craft of composition, especially concerning form, are not often discussed in ways
useful to an apprentice composer - ways that help him to solve common problems. Thus, this will not be a "theory" text, nor an analysis treatise,
but rather a guide to some of the basic tools of the trade. It is mainly based on my own experience as a composer and teacher."

This book is the first in a series. The others are: Counterpoint, Orchestration, and Harmony.

A complement to this book is my Workbook for Elementary Tonal Composition.

For more artistic matters, related to composition, please see my essay on the musical idea.

A pdf version of this book (in English) is available here. A French version of this book is available here.

A version in Spanish is also available as a pdf, as is a version in Italian.

Jmusic:  Music Composition In Java    -
created by Andrew Sorensen and Andrew Brown

"jMusic is a project designed to provide composers and software developers with a library of compositional and audio processing tools. It provides a solid framework for computer-assisted composition in Java™, and is also used for generative music, instrument building, interactive performance, and music analysis. jMusic supports musicians with its familiar music data structure based upon note/sound events, and provides methods for organising, manipulating and analysing that musical data. jMusic scores can be rendered as MIDI or audio files for storage and later processing or playback in real-time. jMusic can read and write MIDI files, audio files, XML files, and its own .jm files; there is real-time support for JavaSound, QuickTime and MIDIShare. jMusic is designed to be extendible, encouraging you to build upon its functionality by programming in Java to create your own musical compositions, tools, and instruments. In a spirit of mutual collaboration, jMusic is provided free and is an open source project. jMusic is 100% Java and works on Windows, Mac OS, Linux, BSD, Solaris, or any other platform with Java support."
